Resist, or yield? The choice is not Seren’s alone.

Late in the Roman occupation of Britain, a young Welsh tribeswoman is hand selected and captured to serve as a courtesan to a Roman Legate and his wife. Escape proves impossible, but Seren is never completely abandoned. Her grandmother’s cryptic prophecy through their psychic connection seals her fate—it will be Seren’s lot to yield. The words both relieve Seren and further mystify her: You must find pleasure in your present life. Fulfillment will not be yours until after you cross into the next.

EXCERPT:

Seren struggled to stifle a shuddering sob as she let more memories drift through her mind. She risked a glance toward Livia, lying next to her in the bed—no harm done. The woman still breathed evenly and had not moved.

The memories flooded her mind. First her father, who had singled out Seren, his eldest daughter, to learn not only some of the strange conqueror’s language, but also some of the wisdom usually reserved for sons. From him she’d learned the name of the town she now knew to be her new home. Her grandmother—now beyond the curtain, but still able to make contact, who had tutored her in the special powers they both shared. She’d not heard from Grandmother since being captured, but she was confident the presence had not left her.

She knew it was her tribe—the Silures—who had held off the Roman conquest of Wales for more than two decades. The stories of that campaign more than a century earlier were still shared around her family’s hearthfire on winter evenings. Her father was descended from the famous warrior who had led the campaign—a connection that had proven useless so far in this more peaceful era. Would he rise up and come to her rescue? More likely, her family would accept that her captors held all the power, and they’d choose not to disturb the peace or draw attention to themselves. Scipio must have calculated this when he selected her.

Taking another deep breath, Seren let the memories fade and welcomed the allure of sleep.

One more nugget of information…

Off and on for the last several months, I’ve been devouring fiction set in the first four centuries AD, focused on the Celtic peoples and the Roman occupation of Britain. So it’s probably no accident that sometime last winter, my husband and I unearthed a plot fragment we’d played with and never followed up on: What if a young Welsh tribeswoman was captured by a high-ranking Roman soldier to be a courtesan for him and his wife, and was separated forever from her only child, a daughter? And then, what if it’s her task across time to re-unite her family through bringing together a descendant of her daughter and a descendant of her subsequent Roman son?

Seren’s Story, a two book erotic romance series, is the result. Book One, the short story Two Seeds are Sown, has just been released at Extasy Books, and Book Two, From Beyond the Curtain, will follow in July.

When the Romans invaded the British Isles, they began in the south and reached what is now Wales in about 48 AD. The wild tribes they encountered there presented some of their fiercest early opposition. Welsh folklore has immortalized one of the last Welsh resistors to yield to the Romans: Caractacus (or Caradoc),the leader of the Silures tribe, who lived in southeast Wales in the lowlands along the northern shore of the Bristol Channel.

To subdue the indigenous Welsh peoples, the Romans established forts, built roads so they could rapidly move their armies, and developed one town. Venta Silurum was located in what is now Caerwent, a mile or two off the channel and roughly 8 miles east of Newport. Caractacus himself was ultimately captured and taken to Rome, where he died in 54 AD.

We’ve found nothing to indicate whether or not he left children behind in Wales, but we’ve chosen to believe he must have done so. In our fictional account, Seren’s father is a local Silures chieftain directly descended from Caractacus, who lived over a century earlier. Seren has inherited not only his standing and his fierce determination, but also several psychic gifts from her grandmother, including divination, the ability to time travel, and metaphysical communication with others. These characteristics and talents form the kernel from which our story has grown.

Let your heart be your compass

Blurb for OPENING NIGHT by Lisabet Sarai

It’s January 1887, a few days before the opening of the audacious new operetta “Ruddigore”. As if librettist William Gilbert doesn’t have enough to worry about, one of the D’Oyly Carte stars breaks his leg doing the horn pipe. Fortunately, the understudy Frank Wilson turns out to be immensely talented, as well as devilishly handsome. Wilson has set his heart on Gilbert – and he’s not going to be swayed from his course.

EXCERPT for OPENING NIGHT – Rated R

Excerpt – R

Opening night was tomorrow, and everyone seemed to be eager and ready. So why did he feel so weighed down, so anxious and exhausted?

It was past ten when a knock woke him from a doze that must have crept up on him despite the fear of nightmares. “Yes, who is it?”

His visitor didn’t wait to be invited in. “It’s me, William. It’s Frank.”

Gilbert bolted upright, anger providing him with sudden energy.  Red boiled behind his eyelids. “What are you doing here? I can’t have you here. Get out, this instant.”

The younger man shut the door. He sidled over in Gilbert’s direction. Gilbert backed away. “I needed to see you, William.  To talk to you, about the other afternoon. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pushed you so hard.”

“Never mind. Just go away now. Please, go away.”

“I apologize for being so rude, so insensitive.  I’ve been wanting you so long, it just seemed natural to say it. To show you. I should have realized how new this would be for you, how shocking.” With theatrical grace, Wilson glided to his knees in front of Gilbert, his head bowed. “Forgive me, please.”

Gilbert gazed down at Frank’s golden curls, gleaming in the harsh electric light. He smelled the man’s floral cologne. Damn, his heart was beating like thunder, and there was an uncomfortable tightness in his crotch. Damn, damn, damn.

“Get up,” he said gruffly. “Show a bit of self-respect, Wilson.”

“Not until I hear you say that I’m forgiven.”

“Fine, fine, I forgive you, now get up and go.”

Gilbert didn’t understand how he did it, but all at once Frank was standing in front of him, face to face, close, much too close. He was taller than Gilbert and had to bend to whisper.

“Thank you, William.” Then Gilbert felt the man’s mouth on his own. He felt Frank’s tongue toying with his mustache, tickling, probing, tentative at first, then bold and confident as Gilbert opened his lips.

Gilbert’s resistance melted. Frank’s arms encircled him, and Gilbert reciprocated, stirred by the sensation of strength in those young limbs. Frank tasted of horehound and tobacco, masculine and yet sweet. Frank kissed him eagerly, passionately, and from some place he had not known existed, Gilbert responded with equal passion.

He felt the hard, hot lump that he knew was Frank’s cock, grinding against his thigh. Somehow this did not terrify or appall him. He welcomed it, exquisitely aware that his own cock was swollen and sensitive.

The dark clouds that had haunted him for the past two days dissolved in the brilliance of Frank’s kiss. Gilbert did not think, did not worry or reason or judge. For the first time in a very long time, he simply allowed himself to feel.

An Interview With Seelie Kay, author of Vive la Resistance

Janina Grey: Tell us why we are going to love the book being featured.

Seelie Kay: Because Donovan Trait is a true hero. He loves his family and goes to great lengths to protect them, making sacrifices no one should ever have to make. He is fierce and fearless, but also vulnerable and he is not afraid to show it. But the man has a greater purpose and it is one he takes very seriously.

Janina Grey: Where and when does this story take place?

Seelie Kay: Most of  the story takes place on a remote tropical island, but there are also scenes in Chicago.

Janina Grey: Who is your most favorite character and why?

Seelie Kay: Aside from Donovan, his wife, Shirley. A turned human, she does not shy away from a fight. She has brought Donovan’s emotions to the surface and made him feel.

Janina Grey: What was your favorite scene to write? And why?

Seelie Kay: The very  last scene and not to be coy, but I can’t tell you why.

Janina Grey: What or who inspired this story?

Seelie Kay: I was inspired by all the hate that seems to be erupting around the world. I felt the need to spin a tale that revealed how hate—allowed to flourish—can have disastrous results. Even in the vampire world.

Janina Grey: Do you have a routine that gets you into writing mode?

Seelie Kay: I am a total pantser. I fell the urge to write and I do it.

Janina Grey: What makes your heroine stand out and what makes her relatable?

Seelie Kay: She is a newly-turned human learning to adjust to the archaic vampire world. As a judge in the human world, she sees the world very differently, and is determined to bring vampires out of the dark ages. Shirley Trait is a pistol-packing momma in every sense of the word.

Janina Grey: How would you rate the steam level of this story and why?

Seelie Kay: Is there some sex? Sure, there are some steamy scenes, but to me, that just makes the couples in the book more real. I think we need to accept that sex is part of a healthy relationship, so I don’t exclude it. However, it is just part of the story, which is rated three flames.

Janina Grey: Is it part of a series or standalone?

Seelie Kay: This is Book 3 in the Donovan Trait Series. I should mention that the other two, “First, We Kill All the Lawyers” and “Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass” are currently 40 percent off at eXtasy Books, my publisher:

First, We Kill All the Lawyers:  https://www.extasybooks.com/first,-we-kill-all-the-lawyers

February 28, 2022 Janina Grey Review

River Magic, by M.A. Phillips

River Magic, by M.A. Phillips

February 28, 2022
Janina Grey Review of River Magic by M.A. Phillips
Get to know my friend and fellow Pagan Author, M.A. Phillips as she shares the journey she took in creating River Magic, a lovable story about Lacey and Cian and life along the St. Lawrence River in New York.
Gifted with the ability ‘to see’ things, Lacey struggles to heal from the heartbreak of a past love as she tries to make sense of her dreams and visions. While trying to overcome an apparent past betrayal of a close friend, Cian, she finds herself falling for him and his blue eyes as easily as slipping into the St. Lawrence River and being rescued by a mermaid mid-winter. A few days later, they celebrate Winter Solstice together and the first sparks of love are kindled.
It’s a low and slow burn as the Lacey and Cian try to figure out who they are, where they are going, and how they will fit into each other’s lives. A group of Druid’s guide them along their journey, helping them discover themselves, which makes everything else fall into place so much easier.
Cian and Lacey’s early awkwardness is endearing and believable, and watching them sort through their feelings is like being wrapped in a warm, firm group hug. Watching Cian find his spiritual path and their two souls meld together as Lacey learns to decipher her dreams, visions, and chance encounters with mermaids makes this the kind of story you want to read over and over again.

An Interview with Author M.A.Phillips

Janina Grey: What is the name your most favorite book you’ve written?
M.A. Phillips: River Magic is near and dear to my heart. It’s not the first book I wrote, but it’s my first published novel, and it’s quite a personal narrative. Though not autobiographical, elements of my life inspired bits and pieces of Lacey’s story, and it takes place along the Saint Lawrence River, which is very near to my own home. Lacey’s religion and connection with the land are very much based on my own, so I do feel that I’ve bared my soul in publishing.

Janina Grey: Can you give us a brief description of the story?
M.A. Phillips:

Lacey Moran returns to her hometown following college. She doesn’t know what to do with her English degree, and is healing from a breakup. Despite that, she’s a budding clairvoyant, and though Lacey isn’t sure what she wants to do with herself, she knows she wants to better understand her skills.
As my blurb says, “The pieces begin coming together when she encounters a mermaid in the river, joins a group of Druids, and opens herself to romance with an old friend.” The latter, a young man named Cian O’Connor, also finds his way in Paganism and, together, they learn how to be true to themselves. River Magic is their homecoming.

Janina Grey: Who are your two favorite characters and why?
M.A. Phillips: I’m very fond of Lacey and Cian. Watching how they grow as individuals and lovers has been a joy. They go through experiences many of us in the Pagan community can relate to: finding one’s path and community, figuring out who to trust their authentic selves to, and navigating relationships with non-Pagan family and friends. Several readers have said the characters resonated with them for these reasons.
They balance each other and are adorable together. Lacey is artistic and more extroverted than Cian in many ways, and she gets him to come out of his shell. Cian’s a classic cinnamon roll, and he absolutely adores Lacey. She grows out of her hesitancy, and very much has one foot in the spirit realm, but Cian helps ground her. They need each other.

Janina Grey: What was your favorite scene? And why?
M.A. Phillips: It’s so difficult to choose only one! River Magic took me several years to write and went through many rounds of revisions to get it to a point where I felt comfortable even submitting it for publication. Despite that, many scenes brought a smile to me no matter how many times I reread them. Without spoiling anything for readers, I enjoyed the tender and romantic moments between Lacey and Cian, but the scenes with the mermaid, especially toward the end, were so exciting to craft. She’s a river spirit with a connection to the local ecology, and she’s quite powerful in her own way despite appearing as a mermaid. She is not Ariel!

Janina Grey: What inspired this story?
M.A. Phillips: Family lore and experience with intuition inspired Lacey’s talents. I then expanded on them with anecdotes from other people I know and folklore to reflect the realities of authentic brushes with the spirit world. The Druid rituals are inspired by my own study and practice of Irish polytheism and involvement in Ár nDraíocht Féin, a modern Druid fellowship. While the main setting, the town of Rock Bay, is fictional, it’s based on existing villages along the very real Saint Lawrence River here in Upstate New York. Readers can visit many of the places Lacey and Cian go, such as Alexandria Bay and Lake of the Isles.

Janina Grey: Why is this your most favorite work to date?
M. A. Phillips: I put so much time and love into River Magic, and I knew there was something special about it. As Druidry became a bigger part of the novel, my goddess Brigid found her way into the narrative, and I felt her presence behind my efforts to bring this story to life. I wanted for others to see what modern Paganism and devotion to Brigid looks like in America. I wanted this book to be something other Pagans could relate to and enjoy, but also act as a means for those of other beliefs to better understand us.

Janina Grey: Is it part of a series or standalone?
M.A. Phillips: River Magic is the first book in the Rituals of Rock Bay series which, to this date, remains a trilogy. The books follow Lacey, Cian, and their friends as they grow in their spirituality and love. It features many characters in the Pagan community, including Lacey’s Druid grove, a metaphysical shop and its owners, and others who come together to plan a festival in the third book. Each title delves further into the spiritual realm, exploring the intersection of modern life with the Otherworldly. I have ideas for a fourth book, so stay tuned!

SAVING GRACE by Elizabeth Doherty

Saving Grace, by Elizabeth Doherty

January 27, 2022 Janina Grey review of SAVING GRACE by Elizabeth Doherty

Meet my friend and fellow author, Elizabeth Doherty, as she shares her creative genius behind the birth of her very own all-time favorite book she’s published – SAVING GRACE.

But first, let me say that as part of my 2022 Resolution to Read More adventure, this was a great first choice for the month of January.

Grace Mueller, the daughter of a retired rock star, pairs up with —yup!—an on the verge of making it big rock star, Declan Kane of the up and coming Tannin Beat. Sworn off rockstars as the result of daddy issues, the last thing Grace wants is to pair up with Declan- professionally, romantically, you name it.

But when her agency is on the brink of closing forever, Declan comes up with a plan that can send Tannin Beat soaring to the top of the charts as well as save Grace’s job. And who knows what else might be salvaged in this crazy scheme!

I fell in love with this story and Grace and Declan so quickly I was up til the wee hours of the morning reading! I know you will too.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for bringing Grace and Declan into my world!

An Interview With Author Elizabeth Doherty

Janina Grey: What is the name of your most favorite book you’ve written?

Elizabeth Doherty: My favorite book I’ve ever written is called Saving Grace, part of my With Every Beat series.

Janina Grey: Can you give us a brief description of the story?

Elizabeth Doherty: Saving Grace follows Declan and Grace. Declan is desperate to get his all-time favorite (and long-time broken up) rock band back together. He’s convinced if they just tour together again, he and his band can be their opening act and finally make it big. Grace just happens to be the daughter of one of the members of that band. Unfortunately, she’s had a major falling out with her father. She’s forced to help Declan when the rec center she works at is about to go bankrupt and she needs to find a way to save it. They set out on a road trip to reunite the band and get to know each other along the way.

Janina Grey: Who are your two favorite characters and why?

Elizabeth Doherty: This is like choosing my favorite child! I love all the characters in this book, but I do have a soft spot for Ridley and Tom. They’re the main characters’ best friends and have a silly love story of their own in the background. They’re both ridiculous and so much fun to write.

Janina Grey: What was your favorite scene? And why?

Elizabeth Doherty: It was hard for me to choose just one, but I think I love the epilogue most of all. It was the first time I cried while writing (happy tears)!

Janina Grey: What inspired this story?

Elizabeth Doherty: I’d had bits and pieces of this story in my head for a long time, but it all came together when I was driving to a Paul McCartney concert. I thought about what might have happened if McCartney and Lennon had ever been able to reunite. As I write sweet romance, I needed a story around that scenario, and Grace and Declan were born.

Janina Grey: Why is this your most favorite work to date?

Elizabeth Doherty: I have a deep love for all these characters. They came to me more easily than any of the characters I’ve written before. I loved getting to imagine how all of these very different people could come together. Plus, I love rock music, and I got to listen to a lot of it while I was writing!

Janina Grey: Is it part of a series or standalone?

Elizabeth Doherty: This is part of a series. The pandemic slowed the series’ progress a bit, but the second book (Thatcher’s story) is chugging along. I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

An Interview With Seelie Kay

Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass!
by Seelie Kay

Release Date: September 3, 2021

Publisher: Extasy Books

Paranormal Romance, Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Romance, Fantasy, three flames

Q & A with Seelie

Q.  Why do you write romance?

Because I am fascinated by the games people play to find and secure a lasting relationship, which is not always love. There’s the chase, the courtship, the falling, the surrender. That’s what I try to capture in my stories.

Q.  Do you prefer a certain type of romantic hero?

I adore smart, dashing gentlemen who aren’t afraid to live on the edge. They can be a bad boy, a billionaire, a prince, or a secret agent. That hint of danger just hooks me! However, I they have to be paired with strong, independent women who aren’t afraid to fight for what they want, even love.

Q.  Why did you write “Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass?”

Donovan Trait is a vampire lawyer. In the human world, a very respected lawyer. I wanted to give him the opportunity to shine in the vampire world. So I created a scenario where his turned vampire bride Shirley is unfairly punished for unintentionally violating their marital agreement, as well as other outdated, outrageous, and outright discriminatory laws. To survive and protect their unborn child, they must not only fight back, but also rebel. In this instance, human history provides them with the path. That gave me the opportunity to draw parallels between the fight for human rights and the rights of vampires who aren’t purebloods. It also allowed me to poke at the continued need of both societies to embrace social change. Perhaps surprisingly, the vampires lag far behind the humans in terms of equality and individual freedoms. However, in the end, the message is clear: Whether human or vampire, an individual is entitled to certain rights and liberties. And no human or vampire has a right to deny them.

Have a taste…before it gets messy.

Excerpt:

Jonathan opened the envelope and reviewed the report. When he got to the last page, his eyes grew wide. “Donovan, it seems Shirley had a reason for that lightheadedness.”

Donovan gasped. “What is it?”

His father handed him the document and pointed at the bottom of the page. “She’s pregnant.”

Donovan grabbed at the wall. Overwhelmed with unfamiliar emotion, he settled onto a chair and rested his head in his hands. “Ye Gods,” he muttered. “I’m going to be a father.”

“And I am to be a grandfather, finally. However, I am afraid the Coalition may have a problem with this. They may not permit your marriage today or anytime soon.”

Donovan Trait turned to his father, his eyes filled with fury. “Why does it matter? We’re already married in the human world and we are about to repeat our vows before all in the Vampire Kingdom. This doesn’t change anything. It’s not like we are going to have a child out of wedlock. We have broken no laws.”

Jonathan Trait arched a fluffy white brow. “We need to discuss this, son.” He sat beside him. “The problem is, you explicitly agreed to allow the Coalition to oversee the conception and birth of any children born of this joining. Every step of the process was to be observed, studied, and documented. You know this.”

“So, they are going to force us to terminate the pregnancy and start over?” Donovan groaned. “It’s too late. I will not force her to start over. They can be voyeurs the next time. I am sure Shirley will have no problem with the monitoring of her pregnancy. It’s not like she can consult with a human physician. They would not understand that her child may have fangs in utero. And the blood work…” He shuddered. “I can’t imagine what…”

Jonathan frowned. “The agreement says from the point of conception, son.  You know what sticklers they are. Our women became barren more than a century ago. We need to understand why. From a scientific perspective, we need to know exactly what was different, so we can find a solution.”

Donovan harrumphed. “Seriously? Did they wish to observe while I made love to my wife? That’s ludicrous. Horny old bastards.”

Jonathan chuckled. “Some of those old fuddie-duddies would stroke out if forced to watch a virile man like you seduce his wife.” His expression turned somber. “Let’s look at the facts as we know them. As a lawyer, that’s a process with which you are familiar.

“Human women can’t carry a vampire child to term. We know that. They miscarry. The human uterus is simply not strong enough to withstand the damage caused by a developing vampire fetus. Those fangs shred the amniotic sac. However, we also don’t know if a female vampire can carry a human baby to term. Shirley may not be able to provide the fetus with the nutrition that it needs to develop properly.

“In addition, we don’t know the point of conception, which means we don’t know if Shirley was fully turned when she conceived. We also don’t know what the genetic makeup of the baby will be and whether that will change as the pregnancy progresses. Furthermore, we don’t know whether the baby’s genetics will alter after birth. We don’t know what the child will need to survive. We don’t know much.

“That raises several questions, Donovan. Is Shirley’s life in danger? And is your child’s life in danger? Not just physically and genetically, but socially. The baby is an anomaly. To some, an adnomination. A freak. He or she will constantly be in danger. If you had kept to the agreement, she and the baby would have been protected. Now everything is at risk.”

Blurb:

It was the Great Lie, and it could destroy the Vampire Nation.

In First, We Kill All the Lawyers, vampire lawyer Donovan Trait survived repeated attacks by a serial killer. Now, after violating a marital agreement with the Vampire Coalition, and several ancient Vampire Laws, Donovan, and his newly-turned vampire bride are on the run. You see, in exchange for permitting a pure-blood vampire to marry a turned human, the Traits agreed to allow vampire scientists to monitor the conception and birth of their children. When Judge Shirley Magnusen Trait turns up accidentally pregnant on her wedding day, the fury of the Coalition is unleashed. The tribunal recommends unacceptable punitive action and the Traits are forced to flee to a mysterious island of vampire nuns. The Traits are, by profession, seekers of the truth. But this time, the truth may not set them free. In fact, it could start a revolution. Will the Traits escape the clutches of the Coalition and keep their babies safe? Or will their family be…eliminated?
