Sometimes Janina Grey is a bit. . . Gray.

While this is a page attributed to all the wonderful and lovely things Janina Grey is up to -whether it’s her latest book adventure or life adventure, sometimes it has to get real.

Now that I’ve finished LACED IN YOUR LEATHER, I’m focusing on my memoir. It’s a story that spans centuries (yes, centuries) and weaves all of the fragments of who I am together to make sense.

One part of the book will deal with my spiritual journey. How I was born into Catholicism, and lived a devoted life as a Catholic until my 40s.

The reason why I’m bringing this subject to light is because as a Sexual Assault Advocate I have learned that there is violence in silence, and healing in speaking. For too long (centuries, really) Catholics remained quiet about what priests were doing to little boys and girls behind closed doors. So while I’ve been working for 12 years officially as a crisis counselor and advocate for victims of sexual and domestic abuse, I rarely told my story.

Until now.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month AND Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We have three months to plan how we are going to speak out. I will not be silent anymore.

There is a world-wide movement to call the Church to task. Which underscores the title I’ve been referring to the Catholic dynasty as for the last five years – the World’s Largest International Pedophile Ring. It was established in the 1600s and has continued to practice this assault and then hide, cover up, and protect the guilty priests ever since.

Recently, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre settled a lawsuit in bankruptcy court because had they not, the vast amount of claims filed against them would have probably shut them down financially had they gone to trial and been found guilty. So they hid behind bankruptcy (which is a tactic many dioceses’ facing this situation today are doing).

In December, after racking up millions in attorney fees trying to get out of being held accountable, the diocese settled more than 600 claims, that’s what we are claimants. Not victims. Not survivors. Claimants, like an auto loan or utility bill. No apology, no empathy, no remorse.

While “Debtors” is such a technical word for such a horrific part played in ruining peoples lives by sexually abusing them as children, here is a list that is just heartbreaking to scan.

These are the Rockville Centre Diocese parishes implicated in housing, protecting, switching, hiding, and ignoring the horrors of “petafyle” priests who were put in place as a conduit to God.

I attended mass in at least 17 of these churches while I was growing up and living on Long Island.

Child abuse in the church has been documented as far back at the 1600s, with the church actually canonizing the priest known for covering up for other *petafyle* priests,Father Joseph Calasanz (Patron Saint of Catholic Schools).

The parish where the pedophile priest who became our family priest for at least ten years was St. Margaret of Scotland, in Selden NY. That church was opened in 1948. A few years later, in 1957, the Rockville Centre Diocese was founded.

We met Father Joseph Casaclang in 1970/71, and immediately I was subjected to his depraved attention. Not even 25 years after the parish was opened, and only 13 years after the diocese was founded.

We moved around a lot. And the church moved Fr. Joey around a lot too, because that’s what they do with pedophile priests. They reassign them to shut people up.

We moved from the Bronx to Selden in 1970 to start a new life. He followed us from that house, to Medford, to Patchogue, back to Selden, and then to another location in Selden before I moved away to get married.

These crimes are insidious and rampant throughout the Catholic Church. And it has to stop.

Below is the list of the parishes implicated in the RCD sex abuse scandal. I haven’t taken the time to weed through them all, but there are 137 listed, yet the diocese website boasts 132 parishes. I attended church regularly, or at least for a service (funeral, wedding, baptism, etc) in at leeast 17 of these locations.

They give the church such pious names “Most Holy Rosary,” “Holy Name of Jesus, ” “Miraculous Medal,” “Holy Redeemer,” “Good Shepherd.” As if assigning these parishes holy names might remind the people working there that pedophilia is not allowed. But it was.

The Rockville Centre Diocese is the eighth largest diocese in the USA.
